*Mortify our Senses..........March 7

O Lord,
mercifully fill our hearts with your grace.
We mortify our bodies
by abstaining from food;
may we also guard our senses
from the danger of unbridled pleasures.

Meaning of most of the Dutch words on the card:[At the top:]"If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me."[On the great cross:]"I am weighed down by all of your sins."[Some of the words on the small crosses:]"Scrupulosity, Disgrace, Ignorance, Sadness, Torments, Injuries, Severity, Contempt, Poverty, Humiliations, Adversity, Sorrow, Loss of Friends, Illnesses, Trials, Crimes, Disfavor, Misdeeds, Loss of Goodness, Lukewarmness, Prosecutions, Insults"

Friends,

Here is the meaning of most of the Dutch words on the card:

[At the top:]
"If anyone would come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow Me."

[On the great cross:]
"I am weighed down by all of your sins."

[Some of the words on the small crosses:]
"Scrupulosity, Disgrace, Ignorance, Sadness, Torments, Injuries, Severity, Contempt, Poverty, Humiliations, Adversity, Sorrow, Loss of Friends, Illnesses, Trials, Crimes, Disfavor, Misdeeds, Loss of Goodness, Lukewarmness, Prosecutions, Insults"

It is wonderful that someone translated the Dutch for us! The holy card is perfect for Lent, but more so when we know the meaning of the words. Many thanks!

Each time I have seen this image, it was alarming at first glance; and near impossible to settle on an interpretation and assimilate that. Cause for despair was easier to see in it than the Hope that it represents, for two reasons: the dark coloring and the fact that I couldn't read the language.

So, thank you John!! While it's still a very dark and congested image, and a lot to take in, it is very helpful to have the language of it translated.

Lord, I pray we not only 'do without' during this holy season, and not simply for the sake of doing without. I pray we 'do without, with You.' Let us take up the cross of deprivation You recommend, and follow You to see the wonder You have to show us in the practice and wake of that. In Your Name I pray, amen.

Thank you to all who have left a comment regarding this blog. John is much appreciated by so many for his faithful translations which make these cards so much more valuable to those of us who don't know what these words say. Thank you friend for all you do to bring us closer to Him in our Lenten journey.

God bless you all. I appreciate the time you take to leave your thoughts.
