Mary appeared to him when he was ten years old and offered him the choice of two symbolic crowns, the white of chastity and the red of martyrdom. He chose them both.
Mostly known for offering his life in the Nazis concentration camp in place of a condemned fellow prisoner who had a family. He died two weeks later of a cruel death by starvation.

Greater love has no one than one give his live for a friend. Kolbe had the chance to live this out..and he took it. I put an account of his death on my blog this morning, which you can find here:

Saint Maximilian Kolbe was a true hero of the faith. We are blessed to have so many saints like him.
Makes me proud to be Catholic.

Dearest Max, though, was the last one in the starvation bunker. He did not die of starvation ... at least not quickly enough for the Nazis. They gave him an injection of carbolic acid to kill him, so they could clear out the bunker.
Pixilated Mum - Thank you for passing this information to those of us who were less familiar with St. Maximilian Mary Kolbe. I never knew that about him (being the last in the starvation bunker.) I will have to read to learn more. Again, thank you.
