IMAGO SACRA MILLE GRATIARUM VALET. ("A holy picture is worth a thousand graces")................... This blog is a means to show some of my holy card collection along with some interesting thoughts and inspirations. "....artists have the privilege in the Church and throughout history, to open up so that people can see the mystery of God. The artist speaks, not just literally, but symbolically. Visual images, if well done, can move us. That's a ministry." Quote from Brother Michael Moran, C.P

Feast of St. Augustine..........August 28
There quickly surfaces the intensity with which he lived his life,
whether his path led away from or toward God.
The tears of his mother,
the instructions of Ambrose and,
most of all,
God himself speaking to him in the Scriptures redirected Augustine's
love of life to a life of love.
"When we pray, we speak to God. When we read, God speaks to us."
St. Augustine

Feast of St. Monica..........August 27
St. Monica
St. Monica is remembered as an example of patience and perserverance in prayer. Through her constant prayer, her pagan husband became a Christian before his death, and her son, St. Augustine, became one of the greatest saints of the Church.
When this holy card was produced her feast day must have been May 4th (the printers published that on the left side of the card) but now, it is celebrated on August 27th.

Feast of Pope St. Pius X..........August 21
Referred to as the "Pope of the Eucharist", he advocated frequent Communion for adults, sacramental preparation for children, and instruction in catechism for everyone. It was by his desire that the Eucharistic Congress of 1905 be held in Rome.
Pius X reformed the liturgy, promoted clear and simple homilies, and brought Gregorian chant back. He reorganized the Roman curia, worked against the modern antagonism of the state against the Church. He helped to draft the New Code of Cannon law, issues in 1917. He encouraged Scripture reading by all the faithful.
Pope Pius X died on August 20, 1914 at Vatican City from natural causes aggravated by worries over the beginning of World War I and was buried under the altar of the Chapel of the Presentation, Saint Peter's basilica.

Feast of St. Teresa Benedicta (Edith Stein)..........August 9
Scholar of the Church
Daughter of Abraham
Daughter of Our Lady of Mount Carmel
Canonized in Rome on October 11, 1998
"Lay all your cares about the future trustingly in God's hands, and let yourself be guided by the Lord just like a little child."
Edith Stein was born to a Jewish family at Breslau on October 12, 1891. Through her passionate study of philosophy she searched after truth and found it in reading the autobiography of St Teresa of Jesus. In 1922 she was baptised a Catholic and in 1933 she entered the Carmel of Cologne where she took the name Teresa Benedicta of the Cross. She was gassed and cremated at Auschwitz on August 9, 1942, during the Nazi persecution and died a martyr for the Christian faith after having offered her holocaust for the people of Israel. A woman of singular intelligence and learning, she left behind a body of writing notable for its doctrinal richness and profound spirituality. She was beatified by Pope John Paul II at Cologne on May 1, 1987, and canonized at Rome twelve years later.
