Micki,
Thanks so much for this card, which I am pleasantly surprised to see.

Although there is no saint commemorated on the Church's "universal" calendar today (optional memorial, memorial, feast, or solemnity), any priest is permitted to celebrate an optional memorial today in honor of St. Germaine Cousin of Pibrac. As you probably know, St. Germaine was a French virgin, a shepherdess who died at about age 22 in 1601. She was beatified by Bl. Pope Pius IX in 1864, and then canonized in 1867.

There is a lot more about her here.

One of my favorite saints when I was a child was St. Germain. Seeing this holy card today just has made my day, Micki. Thankyou for sharing!

Dear little St. Germaine! Thanks so much for this holy card; our youngest daughter is named for her ~ I'll be printing this out for her to put in her little prayer book!

Oh, I LOVE this! St. Germaine has a very special place in my soul. I even wrote an article about her (it's in the April 2009 issue of U.S. Catholic magazine, if any of you subscribe ....).

Thanks, Micki!

John - Thanks for the extra added information. It's always good to learn more. Yes, our church didn't do the Mass in her name.

Diane - You made me smile when you said I made your day. I wonder how you learned about St. Germaine as a young girl? I only learned of her when I got the holy card....a few years ago.

Lisa - I'm so amazed about your naming your daughter Germaine. I hope you might share how you came to give her that beautiful name.

Ginny - How wonderful. I wish I could read the article. Can you email me a copy? She now holds a special place in my heart. Let us all ask her for special graces for all abused children.

Micki -- I'll see what I can do about getting you the article without violating any copyright rules!

Thanks for your interest.

She is such a special and dear friend to me.

All throughout her short life, she experienced constant lonliness, daily abuse and starvation. Under such harsh and inhumane conditions, many of us would have given up and curse God.

Yet, her faith grew stronger, each day, which drew her towards ths cross, while attending daily mass.

How many of could accomplish such love and devotion for our dear Lord, and Blessed Mother?
St. Germaine, please pray for all of the children in our troubled world, especially those, who like you, are experience abuse, from the family or caretakers.

Amen.
