First Saturday of Advent.....December 5

Tomorrow is the feast of St. Nicholas.

Let’s not forget the real St. Nicholas, who, like all the saints, points to Jesus.

Bless us, St. Nicholas, with the true spirit of Christmas.

We celebrate the feast of St. Nicholas on December 6. For people in some parts of the world, gifts are given on this day instead of on Christmas day.
St. Nicholas lived about 1,700 years ago, so we don't know a whole lot about his life. We have many stories and legends passed down through the years, though. Nicholas was the bishop of Myra (which is in the country we call Turkey today). He was known for secretly giving money and gifts to the poor.

  1. He is the true and authentic Santa Klaus. But here in Spain the children receive gifts from the Three Wise Men -the Magic Kings of Bethlem- and not so frequently from Santa Klaus.

  2. Meldelen - How interesting. In the US there are still some families who give children a gift on the feast of St. Nicholas. Unfortunately that seems to be a dying tradition.

  6. We were brought up celebrating St. Nick's with stockings full of oranges/peanuts/candy and maybe a toy. I live in Ohio but when I lived in Virginia nobody ever heard of such a thing.

We still celebrate St. Nick's with our kids and hopefully they will continue the tradition with their family.

thanks for such a beautiful prayer to share with the kids!

  7. Gardenia - Your welcome.

Amy - I hope your children enjoyed the feast day. Thank you for continuing this beautiful tradition. I didn't grow up with it and consequently didn't pass it on....to my sorrow.

  8. The cards were beautiful and, of course, at our house we have to celebrate St. Nick's Day for little Nicholas. Dave's family grew up celebrating this tradition with a sock filled with nuts and fruit. We have carried on the tradition, but include religious gifts like books, a rosary, a prayer card and of course a little candy.

  9. Brittney - Hello to a sweet friend. I am so happy to hear that you all celebrated good St. Nicholas. What a wonderful patron for "little St. Nicholas :-)"
What a great tradition. I'm glad Dave was familiar with the tradition and you are both continuing it. Thanks for leaving a comment.
