Jesus is Crucified.....March 30

They nailed him to the cross and divided his clothes among themselves by gambling.
"Casting lots was a way of making a decision by chance, like throwing dice or drawing straws. The soldiers cast lots to decide who would receive Jesus' clothing. Roman soldiers had the right to take for themselves the clothing of those crucified. This act fulfilled the prophecy of Psalm 22:18."

"Flogging could have killed Jesus. The usual procedure was to bare the upper half of the victim's body and tie his hands to a pillar before whipping him with a three-pronged whip. The high priests and members of the Sanhedrin should have recognized the Messiah because they knew the Scriptures thoroughly. But, they were more concerned about preserving their reputations and holding on to their authority. They valued human security more than eternal security.


May we always keep our eyes ahead to the eternal joy and home waiting for us and not get trapped in thinking the security of our human life is more important.

Denied by Peter.....March 24

Peter said he would never disown Christ, despite Jesus' prediction. But when frightened, he went against all he promised. He failed as a disciple and as a friend.

We need to be aware of our own breaking points and not become overconfident or self-sufficient. If we fail him, we must remember that Christ forgives and can use those who recognize their failure as He did Peter.

Judged by Pilate.....March 23

Pilate wanted to release Jesus, but the crowd loudly demanded his death. Pilate gave in to mass hysteria.



We are like Pilate when we know what is right but decide not to do it. Don't fall to peer pressure. Sometimes the right decision has unpleasant consequences: social rejection, career derailment, public ridicule. Think of Pilate then stand up for right.

Betrayed by Judas.......March 22

Judas may have realized that Jesus' kingdom was not physical or political, but spiritual. His greedy desire for money and status could not be realized if he followed Jesus, so he betrayed Jesus in exchange for money and favor from the religious leaders.

Do we "betray" Jesus for money also....do we place more importance on jobs and entertainment than on Him?

The Agony in the Garden...March 21

The sinless Son of God took on our sins so that we could be eternally saved. He did not want to endure the horrible experience. But Jesus prayed, "Not what I will, but what you will."
